THE area close to Chingford Station is fast becoming a restaurant village, where a world-tour of cusine is possible by walking just a few minutes down the road.

One of the most trusted, according to locals, is La Baita da Piero, an old fashioned smart Italian.

It is certainly popular, on a Thursday night we got the last table in the place despite turning up as soon as it opened at 6.30pm.

On arrival we were greeted with a big smile and a friendly “Pronto” and settled in to look at the plentiful menu feeling welcomed.

As you might expect there is a good selection of pizza and pasta and a full range of meat and fish dishes.

My choice, chicken Kiev was the stuff of dreams. Succulent chicken on the bone bursting with garlic and herbs and encased in just the right amount of crispy breadcrumb batter, this came with a serving of steamed broccoli and sauteed potatoes included in the price.

The chef had managed to cut and shape the bird so that layers of meat were constructed around a sizeble hollow, enabling steam inside to cook the meat to perfection.

My friend’s calzone stromboli was similarly impressive. A monster serving which filled her plate, it was a filling meal of mozzerella, pepperoni and crunchy broccoli.

The desserts are well worth keeping some space for. My large, melt-in-the-mouth tiramisu was so soaked in liqueur that when my friend and driver tried a bite she joked that she had better not be stopped by the police on the way home.

Top marks, however, went to the cheesecake, which, like the tiramisu had clearly been created in-house.

It was a lemony blackcurrant delight, firm, but not too solid with a lovely buttery texture. If you don’t fancy dinner, you could do worse than sit in its canopied terrace area and enjoy a coffee and one of these.

La Baita is not cheap, nor is it too expensive and if you avoid its temptingly full wine list, you can have a decent meal for around £20 per head.

Service speed is just about right, good for a leisurly meal and, if you are in a hurry, as we were, you won’t be kept waiting to pay. Dining at La Baita is a definite treat, good for friends, couples and families.
