IMAGES identical to those on sick leaflets claiming the Liberal Democrats condone paedophilia are available on the British National Party (BNP) website.

Hundreds of residents have received leaflets, supposedly written by disgraced pop star Gary Glitter and claiming Lib Dems want to change the age of consent laws, ahead of next Thursday's by-election in Hale End & Highams Park.

Images and information on the controversial leaflets, including a picture of bogeyman Freddy Krueger and another of children playing, also appear on a downloadable anti-Lib Dem leaflet on the BNP website.

This has fuelled speculation that BNP members are behind the smear campaign.

BNP deputy leader, Simon Darby, said it was not an official party decison to put out the leaflets, and that it may have been an individual member or sympathiser behind them.

He said: "We are not contesting this election and we do not use these kind of dirty tricks.

"But the other parties do this sort of thing all the time, so they have no right to object."

But he agreed with the sentiments in the leaflets.

He said: "When you look at the truth of the matter, in some cases the Lib Dem membership list is not too dissimilar to the sex offenders' register."

When challenged to prove a claim that "many" Lib Dems want to lower the age of consent to 14, Mr Darby said he did not have the proof to hand.

A total of two by-election seats are being contested in the Hale End & Highams Park ward and it is expected to be a close contest between the Lib Dems and Conservatives, with Labour also standing.

Conservative group leader Matt Davis said: "I find the idea that the BNP would attempt to interfere with an election in which they are not even standing in this totally unacceptable way to be a fair indication of their vile way of doing things."

Cllr Davis also said he was confused as to why a BNP member or sympathiser would single out the Lib Dems, as one of the Conservative candidates, Sandeep Christian, is Asian and the other Sheree Rackham, is Jewish.

Lib Dem agent Henry Boyle has described the leaflets as a "carefully designed attempt to smear the Liberal Democrats".

The party has declined to comment further at this stage as it is considering pursuing a police complaint.

how disgusting, this is shy the bnp cannot be taken seriously as a political party in anyway because they will stoop to any lengths, say any amount of rubbish to get whatever publicity they can. they are a complete bunch of losers and anyone who supports them must have afew screws loose.

I think that this has shown that the BNP cannot be taken seriously.

I think they are stooping very low.

I think they are going to great lengths to stoop so low.

The screws have now come loose and they have no support.

Rubbish is making the news now.

Cllr Davis might be confused as to why a BNP member or sympathiser would single out the Lib Dems, but it appears reasonable to assume that the BNP would not attack the Tories because the BNP has long term hopes of recruiting members from among the more right wing members and supporters of that party just as they also seek members from disgruntled Labour supporters (usually very unsuccessfully, despite the bombast you sometimes hear). Presumably the Liberal Democrats have very few members or voters who would ever give the time of day to a party like the BNP. Most Lib Dems I have ever spoken to are more intelligent and humane than that, whereas there is reason to suspect an authoritarian and intolerant streak under the surface in some sections of both of the other big parties.

I have come across people on the doorstep saying they would either support the BNP or the LibDems - they were trying to make up their mind! The LibDems is are a very broad party with some very different people in, some socially liberal and others quite right-wing.

Hold on a moment here, the information regarding the bent, Paedophile sex offending politicians of all parties are clearly published on the BNP website for anyone to read.
What evidence does anybody have that his leaflet was produced and delivered by anyone with anything to do with the BNP? We are not contesting these seats so how does it advantage us to throw a spanner in the works at such a time? Maybe the BNP is responsoible for the lousy summer we just had as well?
