REDBRIDGE councillor Michael Stark has been branded a "Nazi" and an "ignorant pig" during a live radio debate.

Presenter Jon Gaunt was suspended over the jibes made on his national Talksport show, in reference to the decision to ban smokers from fostering in Redbridge.

Mr Gaunt, who spent time in care as a child, was interviewing Cllr Stark about the decision during the show on Friday (November 7).

During the debate, cabinet member for children's services Cllr Stark stated children's welfare should be put ahead of the needs of foster families.

But Mr Gaunt argued the ban could mean children in care would lose out on the chance to be fostered.

And the Foster Network have also criticised the ban, saying that while it was a "good move in terms of creating a smoke-free environment for a child", it did not agree with the "blanket ban on any smokers becoming foster carers".

A Talksport spokesman said: "When we have all the facts at our disposal, we will take whatever action, if any, that we deem appropriate."

Talksport is investigating Mr Gaunt's comments to Cllr Stark after "a number of complaints" from listeners.

well done john gaunt for saying this. here we have a situation where children are living with junkie and alcoholic parents yet redbridge council refuse to allow peole who smoke - which is not illegal yet - to foster.

aboslutely ridiculous.

Agree with the above, very good point Sir.

However how is it that Ken Livingstone got away with his anti-semetic views withe the Evening Standard reporter?

With the smoking bans closing so many pubs, kids are getting more smoke than ever before at home now that parents can't smoke at a pub with their adult friends.

I recieved an email from Mr Stark in which he says that the basis for the smoking foster parent ban is because of the SCOTH report, which has been discredited.

If someone's opinion is different to yours does that make them a Nazi? Of course not, that's one of the principles of fascism! Let's face it the council are terrible a lot of the time but in this case they've actually done a good thing which could well save lives, and for that they, and Cllr Stark, should be applauded.

Cllr Stark is not putting the child first. Any child that cannot be found a foster parent is put into council run institutions, where most children smoke and do as they like. Children must be put first and not used by councillors or anybody else.

you are living in cloud cuckoo land george simpsons if you think it is better for a kid to be living with junkie/drunken parents or in care rather than temporarily live with a fosterer who smokes.

One in 10 children in Glasgow is at risk from neglect, abuse or crime. Children in Haringey being treated like footballs.
They are crying out for loving, caring foster parent, but not if they smoke. How ridiculous.

One of the thing that I suspect is most off-putting for people who want to try and make a difference in their community is having to try and do it in collaboration with the blinkered and intolerant social engineers who work in our local governments.

Calling someone a "Nazi" and an "ignorant pig" is a bit strong, but I do understand the sentiment.
