UK's human rights record is no better than China's

2:50pm Wednesday 27th August 2008

WHY is Lucy Fairbrother so concerned about Tibet? (Guardian August 21).

Has it escaped her attention that she is a citizen of a country which is currently occupying by military force two sovereign states, namely Iraq and Afghanistan?

In Iraq one million people have died as a consequence of the Bush-Blair invasion. Nothing the Chinese have done in Tibet matches that.

Britain is now engaged in its third Afghan war, and bears a heavy responsibility for reducing that country to one of the most impoverished in the world.

If Ms Fairbrother is so concerned about human rights, she could involve herself in challenging Britain’s traditional support for the brutal and sectarian state of Israel, which has been committing atrocities against the Palestinians for the past 60 years.

I am not surprised the Chinese are a little weary of anyone from Britain giving them lectures on human rights.
