RESIDENTS might like to know that, after some debate at the last full meeting of Waltham Forest Council, members from all sides unanimously approved Liberal Democrat plans to increase residential involvement in the running of local facilities.

The Lib Dems proposed a motion that will obligate Waltham Forest Council to consider our proposals for the establishment of a series of Local Management Boards.

These resident-led groups would be given areas of responsibility for implementing ambitious and innovative ideas in our local libraries, sports facilities, museums and galleries to ensure that they fully reflect users’ needs.

We promised in our 2006 local election manifesto that we would increase resident involvement and ‘open up’ local democracy to greater local involvement.

The approval of this motion confirms that, on behalf of residents, the Lib Dems are setting the agenda in this important area.

We have asked officers to conduct a full and proper consultation with residents on these plans, and I would encourage all interested residents to ensure that they have their say on what I believe are a progressive and exciting set of proposals.

Cllr John Macklin, Leader, Waltham Forest Council Liberal Democrat Group.

Is there a timetable for the consultations?

If increasing station car parking fees to the point that car parks go unused. Local roads around the stations now full of those wishing to park and ride, even on weekends when these car parks are totally empty there is still a hefty parking fee.
Probably£½ million lost so far; if this is Lib-Dem democracy at work they can forget it.
It is a relief to read that Labour wish to work day and night on improving access to Public Transport. After working 40 years on this – they are now going on to Shift Work! Probably because its paid at double time?

Keeping facilities open is even more important than who gets to run them. As the LibDems have voted faithfully alongside Labour to close or reduce facilities in Waltham Forest libraries, museums and other public buildings, why should anyone take their proposals seriously?
